Over de geslaagde maar diepongelukkige galeriehouder Susan (Adams); haar ooit gelukkige relatie met aspirant-schrijver Edward (Gyllenhaal); en het verhaal van het boek dat Edward schreef en opdroeg aan Susan, getiteld Nocturnal Animals.
