Critics Consensus

It may not have been necessary to remake the 1985 cult classic, but the new Fright Night benefits from terrific performances by Colin Farrell and David Tennant -- and it's smart, funny, and stylishly gory to boot.

Fright Night (2011) | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Deborah Ross The Spectator If Fright Night is meant to be a send-up of the genre it takes itself too seriously - I can't remember a single decent joke, now I think about it - and if it isn't a send-up then it doesn't take itself seriously enough. In the case of this gorgeously shot remake, the answer is "Yes!" Affleberry F I wasn't a huge fan of the original, it was just a little before my time. I had a lot of fun with this one though. Not only is it funny & gory, buts it's extremely well acted by a stellar cast. Definitely recommend this one for anyone that enjoys a fun, well made horror movie. Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/09/24 Full Review Jinnifer F Not all remakes are bad I like the 2011 Fright Night. Rated 3.5/5 Stars • Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/06/24 Full Review chelsea p I love anything Colin Farrel. I watched this in 11th grade and love it as much now as I did back then Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/06/24 Full Review Andy B An enjoyable remake that doesn't disgrace the original. Colin Farrell is a great bad guy and David Tennant has a lot of fun with his role. That said, the script doesn't do justice to Evil Ed's character and the first act is a rushed and unconvincing setup. Add some ropey CGI, especially at the end, and you have a good movie that could have been really great. Rated 3.5/5 Stars • Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/04/24 Full Review Tony M This is a fine remake of Fright Night. It has its moments but it's not as good as the original. It was cool to see Chris Sarandon make an appearance. It's worth seeing. Rated 3/5 Stars • Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/12/23 Full Review Audience Member Over 10 years old and I remember seeing it with my sister I have to say I was pleasantly surprised it turned out to be a damn good remake! The premise is basically the same but the setting is more contemporary being in a Nevada suburban neighborhood just outside of Las Vegas thanks to director Craig Gillespie Charlie Brewster and his mom live together and they notice a new neighbor moving in next door Charlie’s girlfriend is Amy and he’s pretty much abandoned his friend Ed, they both used to be close until Charlie chose to grow up and be popular But little does he know that Ed found out that Charlie’s new neighbor is a vampire! Charlie finds out after Ed disappears including a new more of his classmates He asks for Peter Vincent’s help; he’s more of a drunk party animal that’s very non chalant but very dismissive Charlie’s gonna need to convince everybody to fight off Jerry so his rampage doesn’t consume everyone Much like ‘Piranha 3D’ the year before it works and doesn’t come off as terrible thanks to Gillespie’s handling of the material The late Anton Yelchin does a good Charlie Brewster next to Christopher Mintz-Plasse as Evil Ed Imogen Poots I like a lot as Amy, Toni Collette is more active as the mother, and most of all Colin Farrell sells it being very suave and deliciously evil as the main vampire, Jerry Dandridge David Tennant is charming as Peter Vincent even if he’s a bit of a prat Love that Chris Sarandon cameo from the 1985 movie! Plenty of good scares and terrific gore scenes to boot along with tongue-in-cheek humor to even things out Definitely feels very modern and contemporary with these people living in suburban homes of developmental housing in the middle of the Nevada desert Thank god they stick to old vampire lore, too without messing up too much However the score isn't very memorable and the original has more iconic lines It stinks this bombed at the box office but as far as remakes are concerned this isn't bad thank god Rated 4.5/5 Stars • Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 08/25/23 Full Review Read all reviews
